Takashi Shimura was a Japanese actor who appeared in over 200 films, most notably in collaborations with filmmaker Akira Kurosawa. He was known for his versatility and range, often playing sympathetic everyman roles but also capable of portraying complex and villainous characters. Shimura is considered one of the greatest actors in Japanese cinema history.
