Nicholas Rowe (1674-1718) was an English poet and playwright, best known for his work in adapting Shakespeare's plays for 18th-century audiences. He also served as Poet Laureate of England from 1715 until his death in 1718. Rowe's most famous play, The Fair Penitent, is still occasionally performed today.
