Maya Deren was not an actor but a pioneering experimental filmmaker and choreographer. Born in Ukraine in 1917, she emigrated to the United States with her family and became influential in the avant-garde film movement in the 1940s and 1950s. Her most notable works include Meshes of the Afternoon and At Land. She died in 1961 at the age of 44.
