He appeared in over 400 films between 1915 and 1958, playing roles ranging from prison guards to police officers. Some of his memorable roles include Sgt. Velie in the Charlie Chan series and police chief Martin in Laurel and Hardy's film "Bonnie Scotland." He died on August 17, 1974, in Woodland Hills, California, USA.
