Duke Kahanamoku was a Hawaiian swimmer and surfer who popularized the sport of surfing worldwide during the early 20th century. He won multiple gold medals in swimming at the Olympic Games and was also an actor in films. In addition, he served as sheriff of Honolulu and was a cultural ambassador for Hawaii.
